AFMI @ World Savvy

Come join us for an evening connecting the missions of the Arab Film & Media Institute (AFMI) and World Savvy through a film screening. The event is part of the AFMI Education Program and is a preview of some of the work that will be shown during the Arab Film Festival, happening throughout the Bay Area, October 12-21, 2018.

The goal of the event is to create a space to share art by Arab filmmakers, promote dialogue, and inspire educators to use available media in their classrooms. Films will run for roughly 80 minutes and will be followed by a panel discussion about how to use film in the classroom, how it can be used to teach critical thinking and provide new perspectives.

Refreshments and a light meal will be served.

This event is free and open to the public, but RSVPs are required because of limited space. Donations are welcome and will be shared between our 2 nonprofit organizations.

  • Breaking fast: On the holiest night during the month of Ramadan, Mo, a practicing Muslim reluctantly attends his best friend’s birthday party, where he unexpectedly meets Kal, a 30-year-old all-American white guy, who catches him by surprise with each twist and turn through the streets of Los Angeles.
  • Pick up: A dad picks his daughter up at school and everything he does embarasses her.
  • Ave Maria: Shortlisted for an Academy Award. Nuns in the West Bank are observing a day of silence. A Jewish family passes through trying to get back home before Shabbat begins and their car crashes, they can’t use technology and the nuns can’t speak.
  • Pianist of Yarmouk: Meet Aeham, a classically-trained musician attempting to escape the war in Syria for safety in Europe.
  • Between Heaven and Earth: Conversations in a hair salon/barbershop with immigrants from the Middle East and elsewhere.
